Finding balance in life this week, for this Calgary artist, involves painting in my studio and seeking pathways of solution with my desktop. What I definitely know is computers are not empathetic. Not sure they are even kind. Painting is so much the opposite.

Over the years I’ve painted uncountable dots on what seems acres of canvas space and everything is always happy. My desktop has 3TB of space and declines to save an edited photo image of a painting because there is not enough space “on the card”. What?

So, the image of the painting with this blog is virtually uneditied. Actually it is a photo from my BlackBerry, not my Canon EOS 50D, that I emailed to myself hoping it would be useable without editing. Well, reasonably so.

Painting has no edit tools and no “are you sure you want to” messages. Mostly, painting is raw human communication.

Imagine a first time visit to Paris, France. Next imagine walking historic streets, visiting fabulous museums, and then there’s more: imagine you are an artist and you have a painting exhibited in the Carrousel du Louvre. Goose bumps? For this Calgary artist? Yes!!!

France’s historic Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA) juried and selected my painting “Antarctica Shoreline” for the Salon 2011 held in December. Last May, I was riding a train enroute to Venice, Italy, when I received an email inviting me to submit work to be juried by the SNBA in Paris for their Salon 2011. I’m sure I read the email message five times before truly relating to the reality of it. A few weeks after I submitted work the SNBA confirmed the jury did accept a painting for the Salon 2011: as a Calgary artist, I would be a member of a Canadian delegation of painters and sculptors (the only one from Western Canada!) participating in this prestigous international exhibition.

There are two thrills in this. The first being participation in the SNBA Salon 2011 is a lovely honour I will forever cherish. The second is I’m self-taught and in this I’ve taken my paintings from a place of early exploration in my old basement studio to an international exhibition in Paris, France.  

Paris is wonderful. The Salon 2011 marvelous. Now, I’m now back in my studio preparing for a number of international events in 2012.

I’m soon travelling to Paris where I’m a Canadian delegate at an international art exhibition of paintings and sculpture: the prestigious Salon 2011 de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA).

“Antarctica Shoreline” is a juried selection by the SNBA to be displayed at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France, from December 7th to December 11th. Needless to say I’m honoured to be a delegate and very pleased the SNBA jury chose a work from the Antarctica series.

Following the exhibition in Paris, I travel to Florence, Italy, with paintings for another international exhibition: “Symphony of Colors” from December 10th to 17th. This too feels an honour.

“Trees Downtown” is where trees, amidst the energies of concrete, vehicles, and people, ask for their lives to be witnessed. Evergreens huddle close to big walls: deciduous occupy solitary space like lamp posts.

Trees share selflessly and listening brings much to know while understanding may perhaps be another painting. Always, this depends on what the canvas seeks as I’m simply the messenger.

“Light! And lots of it!”

This 12″x 10″ canvas was pretty firm about what needed to happen as the colours of autumn appeared. There’s always a flow of energy in moments like this until I respond to the level desired. “Autumn Light” is the result.

Orange tree trunks must exist somewhere. Or rather, if the canvas wants an orange tree trunk then one simply appears. Either way, “Orange Tree” now exists.

Ever seen an orange tree trunk somewhere? Anywhere?

After a wonderful week in Montreal at the Quebec 2011 art exhibition, it was great to get back to the studio in Calgary.

“Evening Shadows” was the first canvas waiting by the easel: it wanted “yellow” and this happened with thin, wet, sloppy dots. Next the canvas wanted “trees”: in response, trees were identified with darker dots where trees needed to be. When the canvas wanted shadows, shadows happened one dot at a time.

Hello everyone,

Here’s a before the opening, behind the scenes, look at the Quebec 2011 contemporary art exhibition in Montreal from October 13th to 16th. Well, it is behind the scenes for Paintings In Dots as the crate has just been unpacked and the paintings are ready to be place on the wall.

It was amarvellous week in Montreal around the exhibition dates. Lots of wonderful new friends. And the paintings must have been sharing “en francais” as they too have lots of new friends. Plus, on the second to last day, a Montreal gallery approached about representing Paintings In Dots. Mais oui!!!

Lots to do with two exhibitions in Paris this December as well as an exhibition in Florence. I’ll be sharing more information on this in the weeks ahead!

Calgary artist represents Canada at prestigious Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris

Work by Calgary visual artist, Jim Pescott, has been selected for the prestigious Saloon 2011 SNBA in Paris to be held at the Carrousel du Louvre, in Paris,  December 8-11, 2011. The exhibition involves a dozen delegations from around the world: it is one of the most prestigious international exhibitions of contemporary art: Canada has been a participant since 2004. Pescott, a painter, joins a delegation of Canadian artists who will attend the opening ceremony hosted by French president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
